TRIP #572007 FULL (sold out)

This is another of our expeditions to the jungles of  Central America or South America.   This is not an expedition made up to be a pseudo-paramilitary adventure or geared around a macho environment. This is an adventure for you to experience, and cherish for the rest of your life. You will experience the most fantastic living rainforest on the planet - The Amazon.

This is not a Rambo trek, but a laid back, easy going learning experience where you will be shown, and hopefully learn some basic and in many cases advanced survival skills from the true experts who live each day in this tropical environment. We will be living in a village with native people, hike jungle trails with them, and learning along the way. I have family in Iquitos, Peru, and spend a portion of each year there so this is not a trip where you are going to be herded like sheep on a tour bus. We will be accompanied by a registered Peruvian guide, and other native peoples whom I trust. Some of these people are skilled jungle survival experts that live everyday in this rainforest. This is a side of Peru, and the Rainforest that tourist do not see.

Health concerns? This trip is taking place in the winter months of the southern hemisphere, but it is still quite demanding. Do you need to be a health freak, walk then miles a day, run marathons, or be a body builder? No, but you do need to be in what would be considered good (decent) physical condition. If you are grossly overweight, or have problems walking over irregular terrain, standing, or heat related illnesses you will not fare well. Like I said this is not a Rambo marathon, but serious medical problem will cause you a lot of trouble in this environment, and it could cost your life or endanger others. Be prepared in the jungle to live with heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and other insects some the size of small animals ;) Like I say this is not a Rambo trip, but conditions change sometimes over night or even hourly.

HERE IS WHAT WE DO PAY FOR:

1. Once we are on the ground in Iquitos, Peru, and until be are back in the air again to Lima we will pay for all scheduled meals, travel expenses to and from the jungle via bus, boats or what ever. Over all as the saying goes we will pay for ‘three hots and a cot’ most of the time. We pay for our Peruvian guides, and we pay our host in any villages that we may stay in. Cooks, and porter if need be.

HERE IS WHAT WE DO NOT PAY FOR:

1. You are responsible for your personnel airfare to and from Lima, Peru, and from Lima too Iquitos. My tickets have been running about $1100 dollars round trip as of this April 2007 from Springdale, Arkansas to Houston, Texas - to Lima, and then on into Iquitos, and back. Airline ticket cost vary from day to day, and it is advisable to book your tickets at least 30 days out. If you need help finding a fare let me know and I will try to find you a cheaper fair. Be careful of certain web site ticketing low price scams such as bidding for a ticket, etc. rip-offs!

2. Your airport taxes are included in your airline ticket here in the United States. Some airports charge more than other, but it is in the cost of your ticket. However once your overseas you pay as you go. You will have to pay your on airport taxes. Lima to Iquitos is about $3.00 U.S.D., and out going taxes from Peru to the United States will run about $25.00 U.S.D. If you need the exact amounts let me know, and I will contact my people in Peru.

3. When we are in Lima you pay for your food, and the hotel if you want to stay in a private room. In Lima we generally all chip in together and rent a nice air conditioned hotel room in Lima to take showers, and use as a launching pad for our last day there, and before we take a few side trips around town. Souvenirs and or other trinkets, etc. from Lima or the jungle are on you. Be very careful what you buy when it comes to animals parts, some dried insects, most all and any live or dried plants, and fresh fruit. Most of these items are not allowed back into the United States, and you can get it taken away from you at best and at worst charged a fine by U.S. Customs when you get caught.

4. Drug? You will have access to more legal and illegal drugs in Peru than you can imagine. If you are stupid, and try to get away buying illegal drugs you will get caught. If and when you are caught buying illegal drugs, or using illegal drugs in Peru by us you will be turned over to the Peruvian Police ….. PERIOD! You do not want to be put in a Peruvian jail my friend, and this is no joke. Your stupidly could endanger the lives of your fellow travelers first off, and it will not be tolerated for any reason.

5. Prostitutes, whore, ladies of the night, companions, what ever you want to call them? Have you ever heard the terms STD, AIDS! Enough said. If the women do not have a DNA card (Government Identification card) they are not eighteen. One last thing people; This ain’t the movies. No one from the U.S. Embassy is going to kick down the jail house door for you. You will rot in a Peruvian prison ----- you have no rights under the U.S. Constitution there. Now with that said. Peru and especially Iquitos over all is one of the safest country, and cities you will ever visit, and they are very friendly to Americans. The women here are like the women in any country, and there is no more undiscriminating sexual behavior among them than with your mother, wife, daughter or sweetheart; so act accordingly ….. You in a foreign country.

6. Alcohol? Over all your responsible for the hooch you consume. Alcoholic beverages as a rule are not included with your meals (food) or social times. I will be more than happy to buy a beer and have a drink with you sometime, but over all it is not included in this package.

7. Health concerns? Life in a third world country is difficult, and medical care is sometimes at a loss. Iquitos has a large hospital, but over all care there is still sub-standard to most hospitals in the United States. Accidents happen, and even though hospital cost are much lower, it is still expensive. We came upon a couple of hikers from Argentina in Ecuador last year. The man had fallen off a rocky cliff, and broke his leg. He was in a hell of a mess, and it took us over six hours to carry him off the mountain to a spot where a helicopter could land and medic-vac him to a small hospital/clinic in the City of Cotopaxi. There ain’t no fire and rescue out here folks. You are responsible for all your hospital cost if necessary, check your insurance carrier, and/or visit one of a number of sites on the web that provide traveler’s insurance.
