Devil's
Walking Stick, (Aralia spinosa), is a
small to medium sided tree that is native in the southeast United States and
especially here, and throughout Arkansas. Also known as the False
Elderberry Tree by mountain folks it shares a close kinship with English ivy,
Ginseng and the houseplant Schefflera. It is known to get up to thirty
feet tall. I have never seen a tree larger than eight to ten foot.
Tree of any size that could be used for canes are rare and found only on
rough ground and along the sides of low gullies (coolies), and hill sides.
Occasionally if your lucky you will see a stand along side a country road, and
be able to get a least one or sometimes two good shafts.
Around this part of the world here in the
Ozark Mountains and in Southern United States this small tree is used for
walking sticks, and canes. With a nice spine or sticker on opposite
sides of the shaft about every six to eight inches the Devil's Walking sticks
make for a nice cane with no two ever looking alike. Great character in
each canes' finish. The canes are sometime known as Hercules Clubs due
to the fact that each truly good cane has a nice bulbous root ball on the end
or top.. Very durable, and stiff but extremely light weight. This cane
is a very nice piece of wood
